Burning Man 2011

Before heading out to the Burning Man Festival this year, I had great ambitions for myself - create a personal photo book to document the people and art at this annual celebration of creativity and radical self-expression.

As soon as I stepped out on to the desert, however, all aspirations went out the door, and I simply wanted to play.  I didn’t want to lug my camera everywhere and worry about it getting lost, stolen, or dirty.  I didn’t want the camera to come between me, and whatever lunacy or organized chaos was happening around me.  For the entire week, I shed the role of “observer” and plunged right into the hedonism before me, dancing the night away, carousing with friends and strangers alike, and flinging myself into every crazy adventure that presented itself.

Every once in awhile I came up for air, and only in these interludes of calm did I remember to capture the magic before me. 

I may not have enough images to create a photo book this year to show for my time at Burning Man, but I do have my wonderful memories as invaluable compensation.
